Women want their clothing to be fashionable, and a dress is a wardrobe staple for every woman. Designers design several dresses that accentuate women’s figures and make them look feminine and pretty. Dress style depends on the length of the dress, neckline, fabrics, sleeves, and shape and cuts of the dress. Women wear outfits depending on their body type, weather and occasion.
Generally, a dress is a one-piece garment with a skirt attached to a bodice. It covers the upper body and a part or full length of the leg. A dress is formal or casual, and it can vary in length. The most significant parts of a dress are the bodice, sleeves, neckline, waistline and skirt. However, not all dresses have all these parts.
Sleeves
The sleeve of a dress covers the arm and comes in various lengths like short, long or mid-length. The sleeves are tight or loose, depending on the style of the dress and the two main types of sleeves are set-in sleeves and non-set-in sleeves. Set-in sleeves join the side sleeves of the bodice at the underarm. Non-set-in sleeves form a part of the bodice.
Bodice
The part of the dress above the waist is known as the bodice. It covers a woman’s body from the neck or shoulders to the waist. It is only the upper portion of the dress and does not include the skirt or sleeves. The bodice is the most significant part of a dress, paired with sleeves to make the top portion of the dress.
Skirt
The skirt is the bottom part of the dress, covering the body from the waist downwards. It can be knee length, above knee length, floor length or ankle length. Moreover, the skirt portion of a dress comes in various styles like asymmetrical, mini, A-line, straight, layered or bubble. The top of the skirt is attached to the bodice and fits well around a woman’s waist.
Waistline
The waistline attaches to the skirt, and the bodice and the shape of the dress depend on the waistline. It accentuates the figure of a woman. There are several types of waistlines. The dropped waistline falls at the top of the hips. The natural waistline sits at a woman’s natural waist, and the empire waistline is placed immediately below the bust of the dress. A dress that has no waist seam is called a princess seam.
Neckline
The top edge of a dress is the neckline, and it’s the part of the dress that gets noticed quickly. It surrounds the neck from the front and adds character to the dress. There are many necklines, including round, high neck, strapless, cowl, halter, boat and U and V necklines. In some outfits, a collar is added to the neckline to enhance its appearance.
Popular dresses for women
An A-line dress is fitted at the hip and slowly widens towards the hem. It is a simple dress that women wear for casual occasions. It looks good on women with pear-shaped bodies because it highlights the shoulders and gives a feminine touch.
The halter dress is perfect for summer because the dress has an upper body without sleeves. Moreover, it has a strap from the front portion running around the neck. Women who like to highlight their shoulders wear this dress.
Women who want to show their beautiful legs wear a mini dress. Generally, the dress ends in mid-thigh, but sometimes it is shorter. The mini is the shortest style of woman’s outfits. They look elegant and are worn for several occasions.
A maxi dress is a popular dress that ends around the ankles but doesn’t touch the ground. They are also known as full-length dresses. Women feel relaxed and comfortable in this dress, which is a good choice for formal events.
Women wear a midi dress when they are not sure about the formality of an event. A midi dress is neither a mini nor a maxi. It suits all body types and comes in different sleeve lengths and necklines.
Most women have several dresses in their wardrobe and wear them according to the weather and their daily requirements. Each type of dress is available in several colours and fabrics. A dress makes a woman look pretty, feminine and attractive.
