The chemicals can also damage the cilia in the respiratory system. This can lead to asthmatic episodes, which are made worse by a chronic cough with mucus. Long-term smoking can also aggravate the symptoms of pre-existing lung diseases.

The use of cigarettes is linked to an increased risk of heart disease and stroke as it contains nicotine. In the United Kingdom, health services recommend vaping as a way to quit smoking, and the Food and Drug Administration granted approval to three e-cigarette products for sale in 2021. But the FDA has stated that more studies are needed to determine whether or not vaping is safer.
